Cold Winter Morning

Sometimes I have occasion to drive to Charlottetown, PEI’s capital, to do business. And sometimes I have to show up there for 8:30am. In the winter, an 8:30am appointment in Charlottetown sees my morning as follows. There’s no jaw-dropping twist to this story; the following is just a simple scene from my simple life.
I am [...]
Winter Snow Still Hasn’t Officially Arrived
Posted by Laura-Jane - Whimfield in Outdoors, Prince Edward Island on 10. Dec, 2009 | 18 Comments
Winter still hasn’t officially arrived yet. And by Winter I mean snow. Horses are still prancing around on crisp frosty grass, and birds are still whooshing their wings through relatively warm air.
Last year, the permanent snow cover blanketed the outdoors by mid-December. But this year, we’ve only had two small snowfalls, and the snow has [...]
Murray Harbour, Prince Edward Island

Based on Barry’s recommendation to visit Brehaut’s Restaurant for milkshakes, we recently drove to the neighbouring community of Murray Harbour to do just that..visit Brehaut’s for milkshakes and ice cream.
The milkshakes and ice cream were divine, and we enjoyed them outside at the Murray Harbour wharf.
The sun was setting and it was a perfect summer [...]
Dairy Bars of Prince Edward Island

I like simple things.
Like eating ice cream at dairy bars.
What is a dairy bar? It’s an ice cream stand.
You walk up to the counter, order your ice-cream based goody, plunk down your cash, and walk away with an ooey-gooey hard-ice cream cone, soft-serve sundae, blizzard, shake, float, frosty, smoothie, or deep-fried Mars bar.
Dairy [...]
Greenwich National Park, PEI

Greenwich National Park, PEI, is as good a place as any to talk about your future. The park extends 40 km from Cavendish to Dalvay, and includes 6 km along the western tip of the Greenwich Peninsula, along the north shore of Prince Edward Island.
We didn’t plan to spend the afternoon talking about the meaning [...]
April Snow

April snow is not something I’m accustomed to.
But this morning I woke up, glanced out the window, and saw our yard covered in fresh snow.
I snuck out of bed, grabbed my camera, and padded around the yard taking photos. As I walked around the yard, the sun began peeking through the clouds.
By dusk tonight, the [...]
Spring Thaw on Prince Edward Island
Posted by Laura-Jane - Whimfield in Outdoors, Prince Edward Island on 20. Mar, 2009 | 15 Comments
Today is the first day of Spring here on Prince Edward Island. The Montague river has almost completely thawed, and we are starting to notice significant changes here on our property.
In February, we knew there was a picnic table buried somewhere under the snow.
But now, in mid-March, the picnic table has been revealed.
Pretty soon we’ll [...]
A Movie From the Whimfield Vault

I recently read Nicole’s blog post about being on the “treadmill of modern day life” as she and her husband endeavour to transition “from a hectic Southern Ontario lifestyle to a back to the land approach that will hopefully lead [them] to Nova Scotia in search of a simpler life.” Nicole recognizes that she’s “building [...]
I Don’t Get Out Much
Posted by Laura-Jane - Whimfield in House, Personal on 15. Jan, 2009 | 17 Comments
It seems that in the winter I don’t get out much.
Sometimes we get groceries. I go curling once a week, and Cameron curls twice a week. Sometimes I attend meetings, groups, and events. We almost went to the movies once.
Other than that, I am inside.
We’ve lived on the island for over a year, and we [...]
Blizzard on Prince Edward Island
Posted by Laura-Jane - Whimfield in Outdoors on 01. Jan, 2009 | 18 Comments
Imagine my surprise when I looked out the window this morning. Blustering, whipping snow and huge snow drifts. I thought, “Oh, blizzard!”
I then checked the weather online and saw the weather forecast: “Blizzard.”
I didn’t realize that blizzard was a technical term. I thought it was just something you said!
