Cold Winter Morning

Sometimes I have occasion to drive to Charlottetown, PEI’s capital, to do business. And sometimes I have to show up there for 8:30am. In the winter, an 8:30am appointment in Charlottetown sees my morning as follows. There’s no jaw-dropping twist to this story; the following is just a simple scene from my simple life.
I am [...]
Whimfield Christmas Wrap Up
Posted by Laura-Jane - Whimfield in Outdoors, Personal, Prince Edward Island on 27. Dec, 2009 | 10 Comments
This Christmas season was an especially festive one, especially compared to last year.
Last year, we were pretty disorganized. We didn’t set up our Charlie Brown Christmas tree until Christmas Eve, and after Christmas was over we simply opened the front door and turfed the tree into the middle of the yard, where it sat until [...]
Winter Snow Still Hasn’t Officially Arrived

Winter still hasn’t officially arrived yet. And by Winter I mean snow. Horses are still prancing around on crisp frosty grass, and birds are still whooshing their wings through relatively warm air.
Last year, the permanent snow cover blanketed the outdoors by mid-December. But this year, we’ve only had two small snowfalls, and the snow has [...]
Last Vestiges of Autumn

This steely cow is preparing herself for winter.
“Winter is coming!” She says.
“I will remain strong!” She says. She stares winter straight on, never shying away from the truth.
Me, on the other hand, I’m scared. The first few winters here on PEI were a novelty. Now I feel like a regular PEIer, and I’m just not [...]
A Frog in the Hand

I was upstairs, inside, thundering away on my keyboard. Fingers flying, ideas flowing.
I heard Cameron calling my name from outside. I opened the window in our office and hung my head out Rapunzel-style. Looking down, I saw Cameron smiling up at me, saying “Frog, I’ve got a frog!”
I smiled and bent my head back inside [...]
Timing is Everything

Timing is everything.
On our way to the big city of Charlottetown for a night on the town (dinner at Mavor’s and then a movie), we crossed the Montague River bridge at sunset. The light was just…perfect. There was no discussing it; we had to stop and take pictures. I veered the car off the road [...]
Dunn Creek Farm
Posted by Laura-Jane - Whimfield in Outdoors, Prince Edward Island on 10. Sep, 2009 | 10 Comments
We recently visited John Quimby of Dunn Creek Farm who was kind enough to have us over for a tour of his certified organic farm in Murray Harbour North.
He was also kind enough to stuff us full of organic veggies at his kitchen table and send us home with baskets of organic potatoes, yellow beans, [...]
Murray Harbour, Prince Edward Island

Based on Barry’s recommendation to visit Brehaut’s Restaurant for milkshakes, we recently drove to the neighbouring community of Murray Harbour to do just that..visit Brehaut’s for milkshakes and ice cream.
The milkshakes and ice cream were divine, and we enjoyed them outside at the Murray Harbour wharf.
The sun was setting and it was a perfect summer [...]
Dairy Bars of Prince Edward Island

I like simple things.
Like eating ice cream at dairy bars.
What is a dairy bar? It’s an ice cream stand.
You walk up to the counter, order your ice-cream based goody, plunk down your cash, and walk away with an ooey-gooey hard-ice cream cone, soft-serve sundae, blizzard, shake, float, frosty, smoothie, or deep-fried Mars bar.
Dairy [...]
Lilacs in June

Lilacs in June are a beautiful thing.
Yesterday, I was doing work in my home office upstairs. Cameron was outside working on the tractor.
Suddenly, the screen door banged downstairs. Cameron yelled into the house at a high-decibel, “Laura-Jane, come here, quickly!!!!”
I hopped out of my chair and bounded down the stairs, picturing a severed finger or [...]
