Out on our Heels
Posted on 16. Feb, 2008 by Laura-Jane - Whimfield in House
For the past month we’ve been living in a tiny motel, as we ink out the details regarding the purchase of our house. Our month in this motel is almost up, and we have to be out of our room in a day or two.
We still don’t have a firm date on when our sale will close, but it should be within the next week. So, we’ll be sleeping in our Toyota Landcruiser again.
Now, really, it’s not as bad as it sounds.
Just two months ago, in December, we drove across the entire country and slept in our car for 28 days straight. It was great! We have an incredible heater that runs all night, curtains, and a double mattress in our truck, so it’s very cozy.
So, back in our truck it is, but that’s okay, because soon enough we’ll be getting the keys to our little dream house.
Over the past twenty years, the house has been used as a summer home only, and the house has NO insulation. None. So, as soon as we get the keys and after enjoying one day of House Bliss, we’ll be diving into insulating the house.
I can’t wait!

How cool, to be young and excited and sleeping in your car! Once babies come along – forget it! This is your only chance. Hope you get the keys soon and can start spreading your enthusiasm to the new digs. Congrats!

Hi, what type of heater did you use? Please let me know, its very interesting, to be able to sleep in your car. It certainly saved you money until you settled on your beautiful home. Congratulations, you both are very blessed and lucky to have found it.
Lots of luck, humor, and love,

Hi Ana,
The heater is a diesel Webasto Airtop 2000 (http://www.webasto.us/am/en/am_marine_heaters_826.html). These heaters are designed for buses, delivery trucks, boats, etc, but I went ahead and installed one under the hood of our Landcruiser. It worked very well and was toasty warm but there were a few hicups that I had to solve while we were en route. I plan on posting an entry detailing the setup in the near future.

Hi there,
Good for you!
I live in Victoria, and have been dreaming about doing the same, only not in winter :)
PEI has been calling me for 10 years… that’s so cool you two followed your dreams.
Endless luck to you both,
Oliver
