Making Snowmen in the Country
Posted on 19. Feb, 2009 by Laura-Jane - Whimfield in Outdoors
I used to live on the west coast of Canada, where we almost never got any snow. When you never get snow, the slightest hint of the white stuff makes people go crazy and there’s a snowman in every second yard.
Now, I live on the east coast of Canada, where snow is a part of everyday life. There’s so much snow that last year’s Christmas tree got buried in three feet of snow.
This afternoon, Cameron and I got to talking about snowmen and how we can’t recall seeing one this winter at all. Now, that’s not to say that people around here don’t take the time to build them. Remember that we don’t get out much, so there could be thousands of lonely snowmen in this town that I’ve never had the honor of setting my eyes on.
But the point I’m trying to make is that when there’s something lovely around you all the time, you tend to take it for granted.
Today, if you can, make a snowman.

The part of Korea I live in doesn’t get much snow either, but in December we had about an inch that stuck on the ground, and the kids at my school somehow managed to make a snowman that was about 6 feet tall and fat enough that I would have been able to get my arms around it(6′3″). Still don’t know where they got all the snow for it. LOL. But like you said, if it is rare, they will find a way to take advantage of it while they have it.

I was hoping that the little snowman photie was yours! LOL. Growing up in Utah we get plenty of snow–and I’m quite ready for mine to melt. :)

Yes, I grew up here, but that sentence was horrible! Ugh!

Was hoping to read a comment about snowmen before your winter was gone.
Benjamin (Ben)did you help your students build the snowman?? Do you remember the really tall one you boys made with your father??
Yes, Ben is my son and is getting married on the Island this summer.
When I was a child in Iowa we used to dig caves and tunnels in the snow drifts, what fun!! and always had hot chocolate when we came inside, made the old way.

not enough snow here for a snowman today *tear*. just enough for random SMALL drifts in our driveway. (our drifts are like 6 inches; not 3 feet). lol.

so true…I was just recently lamenting nothingness but figured out that the nothing times are what I really remember anyhow…sometimes I just need to stop and smell the roses…

Hi L-J
I thought your snowman looked a bit lonely so I went in search of a snow lady for him.

The URL is quite lengthy so I hope it works.

@Ben – I’ve always wanted to teach ESL. Do you love it? Do you have to love children to do it? Thoughts to share? I’ve seriously considered doing it after I get sick of Whimfield!!!!!!!! Any thoughts to share?
@Sarah – I know. I am pathetic. But my snowman was so ugly. And so tiny. It was, like, one-foot tall. I was mortified at his pathetic nature.
@Freda – How do you make hot chocolate the old way? Seriously, I want to know. I am guessing that it’s cocoa and sugar? I am a hot chocolate aficionado, so I must find out.
@Christy – Re: smaller snow drifts, it’s all relative!
@Warren – Yes, I know. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed with the small stuff and forget the big stuff.
@Toni – I’ve never built an igloo out of snow, although I would love to try it. I believe Cameron has some memory from his childhood about doing that with his dad and sister.
@Gary – Lol, that is one foxy snowy woman! I don’t *think*, I *know*, that the snowman will like her. What’s not to like? Lol
@Amber – Aww, your comment makes me grin, Amber… :)
