I Don’t Get Out Much

It seems that in the winter I don’t get out much.
Sometimes we get groceries. I go curling once a week, and Cameron curls twice a week. Sometimes I attend meetings, groups, and events. We almost went to the movies once.
Other than that, I am inside.
We’ve lived on the island for over a year, and we still haven’t swam in infamous Cavendish beach. In fact, we haven’t even seen it.
We haven’t touched anything Anne of Green Gables. We haven’t heard the Singing Sands. We haven’t watched the wind turbines whip ’round and ’round. We haven’t tasted the cheese lady’s gouda, haven’t been inside the bottle house, or haven’t done much else for that matter.
The only adventures we’ve really ever taken here on PEI have been:
This is not to say that there’s much to do; it’s just that we don’t get out much.

Good you haven’t done the Anne of Green Gables, you can save it for your company as well as the other things you haven’t done yet!! See you summer 2009!!! Hey,you forgot Lobster fishing and what about the small halls concerts? Cute picture!!

There is this thing called life………and its short…….I’m sure you did not move here to renovate and sit in a house………now go find your list and move some things to the top of it :0) Not today mind you its to cold…….walking the beaches is a must…..find some sea glass…….or a sand dollar……..walking through old grave yards go along the capes and pick berries…….lots to be had on this Island…….made my own cranberry sause this year from berries I picked. Attend a Celieh…..they run all year. The touristy stuff is okay but….. get out of the house……..attend community school…….there running them in most communities right now, go cross country sking in Souris its $10 bucks which includes the ski rental…….as my mother would say “get out and blow the stink off you”……..really go get your boots and hat and scarf and mittens a heavy coat……….go ……….go now :0)

i reccomend sledding. this is what you do on the east coast! or skating if there is a frozen pond around. but sledding is really where its at. i grew up with crazy carpets. some of the best times of my life involved flying down a mountain on a crazy carpet.

Nora’s right, you know. You really do need to get out more. Otherwise…you end up like ME.

@Vicki – You are right! How strange, but I forgot about those. We did go lobster fishing and attend a ceilidh.
@Nora – Lol, yes, I know, you’re right. My list is boring! Now cross-country skiing I can get excited about. Especially $10 cross country skiing. :)
I really wanted to take some community school classes this year. Finding out about them was one of the most shocking and amazing aspects of PEI: parks and rec classes that cost almost nothing ($10 for ten sessions??!!!!). Even though I haven’t taken any myself I love everything that they stand for.
@Shonna – Shonna, skating, crazy carpeting and sledding sound scary! (I am one of those people at skating rinks that clings to the boards. When crazy carpeting I will accidentally hit a bump and land on my nose. And when sledding, I will be standing at the bottom when a hooligan careens into me and knocks my feet out from beneath me and I lie there sobbing silently while another hooligan comes down the hill and crashes into me after I am already sprawled on the snow. Lol, no, I am *not* a fuddy-duddy. Oh wait, yes, I *am* a fuddy duddy.)
@CWJ – Much like cross-country skiing, snowshoeing is of a pace I can handle. Eventually, there will be snowshoes. :)
@Amber – What a great business idea. Thanks for sharing about Experience PEI. That’s definitely the type of vacation I would be looking for if we were coming for a visit. PS: Amber! Congratulations on your success with the Best of PEI photo contest… :)

Trust me….. You’ll do all these things and more when you have your kids…..
I went to the zoo, (as natural as you can get in a city), after 17 yrs,
and all bcoz my daughter would go too!
And dont let idea of kids freak you out…
I beat mine lil one twice a day,
But I have no time to think!
P.S: I was a great thinker too….
& then the lil terror happened! :-)

Well I declare…..You guys just have to get out more! Yep make a list and then set a schedule to start checking them off. Lots of great suggestions in the previous posts.
Just take a day or whatever a week for example and shut off the computer, put away the tools and go do something different and hopefully interesting.
Explore your new Island home, meet the people, experience the culture and “make memories” as my dear mom used to say.
Amber: That is a great link. I’m inspired to post about them on my “Hidden Island Paradise” blog.
Also congrats on your win as well.
K I’m off to draft and publish that post.

If you can get excited about $10 cross country skiing, for $10 and a donation to the food bank you can run the Freeze your Gizzard Half-Marathon in Montague on Feb. 22nd :) If you’re not up to 21Km you could just run the 10K event….

We are so fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful provinces in Canada. People save up all year to come here for two weeks of vacation just to enjoy the scenery and beaches, amongst other things.
When we moved here, we decided to try to balance work with play and I think it’s going well. I work 3 days a week and dh is retired, so we make sure to get out on those other 4 days and really live life. We have criss-crossed the province in these last 7 months and really seen PEI. Road trips are fun and I love discovering all the little towns and villages here. I must say we have focused more on summer fun than winter, but snowshoes are in the future for us too. Every day, I make time for a walk with the dog, just for exercise and fresh air (and because the dog demands it!).
So, grab Cam’s hand and blow the drywall dust off him, and get out and go for a walk! Well, maybe not today as it’s -23C, but soon!

I have pics of growing up in NW Pennsylvania where the snow and ice completely covered our back door such that we could not get out. I know you are speaking in a more general sense, but isn’t it crazy when you really can’t get out easily? Take me to Miami!

@Sayantanee – This is why I am freaked out of having children! Lol, but even I can recognize that the hard times outweigh the good. (I think? They must.)
@Gary – You are the best recognizer of good! I’m sure Experience PEI will appreciate the link. And I really shouldn’t post these motivational list posts and things, because then I am forced to take my own advice! :) What is that expression..? You know the one..
@Jypsy – You and the running. And in February? Sheesh! And you make 10k sound like a cake walk! But I haven’t exercised a morsel since I went cold turkey from the renovations, and I really need to do more. So who knows, perhaps I should just do it! Hmm. I think I’d need a very compelling reason.
@Andy – Guerrilla tourism!
@Kerry – You’ve got it figured out. Balance is key, but I think we’re extremely off balance! I long to explore all the little areas/towns/villages as it sounds like you have. I hear tell of so many little places and I’d like to be able to picture them in my head. Dogs are a great motivator and a great excuse to sigh, put on winter gear, and get outside. I always find that once you pass that threshold of having to GET out, once you ARE out you feel great.
@Warren – Lol, Warren, but do you actually want to go to Miami? I can’t picture you there. I mean, I can picture you, but you are just not Miami-ish. Could you raise bees in Miami?

Just so you know….. I’m the one who drives Alex to the races and cheers (and registers runners and sometimes works water stops or the finish line or anything else that needs doing…)
I walk. With a cane. But…. since taking Alex to all these races has induced running dreams (literally – I can’t count the number of times I’ve dreamed I was running), I do hope to run 5K before I die.
I need to work on *balance* though…. ;)
And make peace with a pair of running shoes (my feet have only known Birkenstocks, felt pack boots and total freedom for over 20 years now)
