2007 – The renovation
First, we drove across the country in the middle of winter and slept in our car for 28 cold nights. Then, we finally arrived on Prince Edward Island, our new home-land!
We waited to move in to our farm house and acreage. We finally took possession of our drafty, dilapidated farm-house and found that PEI winters were more bitter than we’d bargained for.
We started to renovate our falling-down-house from the inside out. Our house is over 100-years-old, and we found lots of strange items in the walls. We spent a lot of time ensuring that our house is very energy-efficient, because we don’t like paying bills (and we like the planet, too)!
Some days were good, and some days were bad. Sometimes we’d think about what we’ve accomplished and were amazed at how far we’ve come.
2008 – Farm life and country living
Laura-Jane started to learn how to become a better farm woman. We learned a lot about each other.
Finally, the snow melted and summer arrived.
Summer found us conquering a lot of problems–including our fear of heights as we shingled our steep roof.
But, as summers are wont to do, it started to get cold again and we began thinking about winter once more.
2009 – Life’s big questions
But now that our house is starting to almost look like a home (and not a construction zone), we get to turn our attention to the big picture: what we want out of life and why we bother doing the things that we do.
Eventually life got a little easier. We got all our firewood stacked and we bought a tractor. And then we started building our businesses. Of course, there were emotional hiccups and fears along the way.
Things are never as easy as we think they’ll be. And happiness is just as elusive as I’d feared it was. But every day comes with a new adventure. Today is the first day of the rest of your life!
