Goodbye, Trusty Brown Down
Posted on 04. Nov, 2008 by Laura-Jane - Whimfield in Life Dream, Personal
Yesterday, our home was coated with snow, and I thought I might have to buy a new winter coat because of the cold.
Thankfully, the snow melted, and once again my crazy blue vintage sweater should suffice for warmth.
“When the weather turns cold, couldn’t you just wear last year’s winter parka, Laura-Jane?” you ask.
“No, no, I simply cannot!”
“And why not?” you ask.
Well, last year’s trusty brown, down-filled parka had to be retired.
You see, originally, trusty brown down was a very clean coat.
But then it was taken on a 28-day winter road trip across the entire country.
Trusty brown down experienced a lot during the trip.
Trusty brown down rode around on a snowmobile.
It saw the slopes.
It even visited Niagara Falls!
After our travels were over, I realized that trusty brown had proven itself warm and worthwhile on that cross-country road trip.
And so it was called forth for another tour of duty: to keep me warm while I renovated our unheated house.
When trusty brown down accepted the call, I don’t think it realized what it was in for.
Trusty brown’s schedule was as follows: get worn every single day in a house with no heat. Get covered in caulking, paint, putty, and glue. Get snagged by nails. Get scorched by propane torches.
It was a slow progression, but this last tour of duty eventually led to trusty brown’s demise.
Goodbye, trusty brown down. You served me gallantly.
Wherever you go, trusty brown down, please say hello to green toque for me.
(I always felt bad about the way green toque and I parted; one day, I was in the Atlantic Superstore grocery store holding hands with green toque. Then suddenly, green toque was gone–never to be seen or heard from since.)
Goodbye, trusty brown down. May you rest softly.

Quite a difference from first picture to last there. I’d say you wore trusty brown down every second you possibly could.

’tis sad to part with a dear companion. May she rest in peace!
But please be careful in your time of need, not to alienate or offend crazy blue vintage. In a pinch, even these sorts will carry you through the cold times. Show her the proper attention and she’ll serve you well also!

I love the way you’ve made a fabulous picture story out of your random photos! The photos have, with your choosing of them, become a cohesive sequence of events! This is as good as a children’s bedtime story, and it is even a true story, about Trusty Brown Down.

I lost my favourite boiled wool winter jacket/coat a couple of years ago, and don’t know how to replace it . Everything else I wear for warmth looks ‘wrong’ to me!
When and if I am in a clothing store, I only look for ‘that’ lost boiled wool jacket/coat, which is a ridiculously futile endeavour, isn’t it!

Poor, poor parka. I hope you find a noble replacement!
