First Snow of the Season: Winter is on its Way
Posted on 03. Nov, 2008 by Laura-Jane - Whimfield in House, Outdoors
It’s quite humbling to think that a week ago our house didn’t have a source of heat, and already now the first snow has arrived.
We expect it to warm up again over the next few days, but still… Waking up to snow made me step back and think, “Winter is nearly here.”
In all honesty, though, we are far more prepared for winter than I ever thought we’d be.
We moved into our house in February, 2008. It was a summer home, and it was nowhere near ready to withstand an East coast winter. Over the last eight months we gutted the entire house down to the studs and insulated every nook and cranny.
We even re-shingled our roof, and chopped all our firewood for the winter.
Don’t get me wrong, we’re not READY-READY; but we are a heck of a lot closer than I thought we’d be.
I wonder what we’ll accomplish over this winter! I’ve got big plans: for the house and for other aspects of life, too.

OMG! Snow!
In my book, pretty though it may be, snow is a four-letter word with good reason. SO glad you got your heating issues resolved for now. That was cutting it close.

It looks like your insultaion is working (or else your wood stove is not) since you still have snow on the roof…it hasn’t melted through heat loss yet!
I can’t imagine snow yet…we’re supposed to be 75 today!

Well that is a surprise. I thought that you temps were staying close to ours here on the WET coast. See you are 4 this morning & we are sitting at 6. I’m ready for winter. Ya, we put the car in the garage. ha ha! Your pictures look beautiful, peaceful & serene. But I’d be heading to the woodstove with a glass of wine!! Thank goodness you got it in just in time.

Wow! You guys got way more snow than us! We didn’t have any amount of snow stay on the ground for more than 20 minutes yesterday. How’s the Blaze King working so far?

The Blaze King is working great! What a great stove! We’re getting 12 hr secondary combustion burns on 2 cuft lightly seasoned softwood slabs. I’m sure we could get close to the advertised 20 hr burns with good seasoned hardwood.

Congratulations! Nice work getting ready on time. Hope your new stove is keeping the house warm and cozy. What are your plans for the winter? Do you have interior finishing work yet to do?

It may have been a summer home for years, but prior to that it was a year-round home for a family!! Imagine waking up in your cold, cold bedroom and running downstairs to crawl under the buffalo rug on your grandpa’s bed. Later that buffalo rug would come off the bed to cover your knees for the sleigh ride to school!
