    Since moving here I have found out alot about myself and animals…..I am petrified of chickens (we have them) even the baby chickens….hate rats and rodents of any kind. Don’t like toads or bugs…….but the weirdest things that I have found is that I am not afraid of cows, even walking through a herd of them……I’ve even participated in herding and moving them. Love horses and cats…….I love my dog but not anyone elses (I know weird) I like salamanders and worms and I can tolerate snakes………all of which I have had experiences with since I’ve been here…..I love seeing whales and dolphins when we go out on my families fishing boats, I’ve even seen a shark (they still creep me out and remind me of the movie Jaws). But one thing that I have noticed is that when my children are around I will try new things so that they will not be afraid, they are more willing to try new things than I ever was. So your right everyone should try something new whenever the opportunity arises……but I am still not going to hold a chicken……..yuck.

    Can you confirm that a rooster in the hand is better than 2 in the bush?

    Cool experience! Glad you enjoyed it. I get excited to hold my cat even. Holding a calm animal is always neat. It is a bit different but I love to have calm bees walking on my hands when I work the hives. It’s pretty magical I think.

    Huh…a very poor example, when compared with the mighty Sylvester ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_wesley_farm/209317453/ ). Let’s try for a little realism on your website (no matter how intimidating…), OK Laura-Jane? ;-)

    @Nora – Lol, but you have chickens! You mean the fear/discomfort doesn’t go away? I’ve never seen a shark. I do not ever wish to see a shark. Let’s never speak of sharks ever again. :)

    @Warren – Indeed! I’m not entirely sure, but I feel like I could handle bees on bare hands…up to a certain number. I am not sure what the maximum number would be…but probably a far lower number than you, Warren, keeper of bees.

    @CWJ – You’re right. I’ve added THE REAL ROOSTER (Mighty Sylvester) to the post. Sylvester looks very regal in his photo. Upon further investigation, the little red beaky-gobletty-bits of the fake rooster were nowhere even close to Sylvester’s colours!?! I am not astute when it comes to poultry. All flapping feathers look the same to a silly city slicker like myself.

    Shark,shark,shark…..LOL I’m sorry, I just had to do that! I lived on a sailboat when I was a kid and I was circled by a shark while spearfishing with my dad! Just like you have to get back on the horse I got back in the water the next day. Took awhile to get rid of “I feel that a shark is near me right now” feeling, but I did.

    I fear spiders!

    C’mon, Laura-Jane, how can you not want one of these handsome fellows now?

    Me? I love my chickens. Right now, living in my (unfinished) bathroom, is a bantam hen setting on seven teeny-tiny eggs.

    Soon, hopefully, I will be surrounded by little peepers as I take my bath!

    Aaaahhh, much better. If you squint your eyes, you can see that Sylvester actually looks a lot like Brad Pitt…

    I don’t really know why I am petrified of chickens but when I have to go to the feed mill to pick them up…..I always ask them to put them in my SUV for me and I drive with the cell phone in my hand just incase one gets out….cause if one does I’m am so out of that truck and someone needs to come get me LOL. I’d rather swim with a shark…….do..do……do..do……

    @CWJ – I can see it! I think it’s the robust chest.

    @Nora – Lol. Well, when I have shark trouble I’ll call you and when you have chicken trouble you can call me. Although, I’m really not that good with chickens either, now that I think about it.

    @LJ – Thanks LJ!

    Beautiful birds!! We hope to have our chicken coop built this year and finally get some hens. Chantecler chickens were suggested to me, because they are bred for our climate (by monks in Oka) and are good for meat AND eggs.

    Is anyone giving you farm-fresh eggs? :)
