Let’s Go For a Walk
Posted on 01. Dec, 2008 by Laura-Jane - Whimfield in Inspirations, Outdoors
The weather has turned glorious again. And the snow has almost disappeared for the time being!
Because the sun was shining I wanted to go for another walk, but this time I took Fay’s advice and didn’t go alone.
I invited my favourite walking companion, Cameron (who also happens to be my favourite…everything), to join me.
What is it about walking that makes it the perfect outing between two people?
Maybe it’s the lack of distractions. Maybe it’s the fact that you’re completely removed from the usual setting.
Maybe it’s the movement. The scenery. The air.
Maybe it’s the wind.
Whatever it is about walking, I always know that walking will lead to good conversations.
I can think back to many happy walks from my past. I guess they all started with my mom. She’s an avid walker. When I was growing up, she and I used to walk all over the place. As adults, when my mom and I get together she’ll frequently look at me and grin, “Let’s go for a walk!”
I can remember walking with my dad and my step-mom on the weekends, during which they’d ask about my life and want to hear my stories.
I can think of times when one of my sisters and I lived in the same city, and we’d get together for weekly walks to catch up and talk about our lives.
I can think of walks with Cam, when we’d ask really big life questions and try to figure out what we wanted out of life. I’m sure our big idea to sell everything we own, drive across the country, and move here to Prince Edward Island was conceived on a walk.
I can think of taking walks by myself, figuring out what I wanted out of life.
A good walk can happen anywhere: on the streets of a city to a vibrant park, like the one we walked to yesterday.
No matter where you are, if you can walk, do.
Even better, invite someone to join you, too.
Because you never know where you’ll go and what you’ll talk about.

My father walked everyday,he walked miles to pay the bills when everyone was talking the bus,it’s a lesson I learned a long time ago,you can stop and talk to folks on the way to your destination, and on a sunny day you smile even more,to pleople passing by.He lived until 96,everyone says they missed him passing by.Have a great day.

All so true. Roddy and I have major talks on walks too. I feel so grounded and free at the same time when I’m strolling – alone or with company. When I’m walking, I leave the weight of my day job and I take in so many details of my surroundings.
My grandpa also used to advocate walking everyday; and he lived into his 90s as well. I think of him often when I’m reaching for the doorknob to strike off.

Here’s a little reply from Laura-Jane’s mom about walking. I could fill a novel about my memories of walking and talking, or jogging and talking (and actually preferring not to talk while jogging!) I’ve been walking less and less lately (why??) but always enjoy the three-dimensionality of it when I do. By three-dimensionality of it I mean; seeing the scene ahead of me slowling rotating into close proximity, and then rolling away behind me as I keep moving through the landscape.

@ Warren – You have a good eye! It’s an old-but-new-to-me-again coat…
80% of our stuff is still in boxes (and has been for over a year now!), but I recently found this old coat of mine as I was rummaging through boxes looking for spices.
Still haven’t bought a good winter parka yet though!

Nice blog Laura-Jane,
Walking is something I still do often with my Mum too. Even though in the city, we have access to some great parks and wooded areas. Your pictures of PEI look amazing!
Packing coats and spices together when moving, eh? lol. I can relate. I packed a pair or cord pants, along with a pound of butter together when we moved here. That was over 2Oyears ago now, and I’m still looking for them!! Maybe best I don’t find that box at this point. lol
Anyway, I enjoy the blogs, look forward to reading the next one soon.

Beautiful pictures. I need to make time to walk!! Somehow walking or is that running around the office just doesn’t cut it!! Not tonight though. We are off to the annual Koers party in approx. 1 hour. We will of course have our usual Cam & Laura-Jane conversation, but this year we will not be worried to death about you guys travelling across Canada in the dead of winter!!!! And thank godness for Blaze King!!

Great photos! I walk every day with my dogs, and do my best creative thinking while plodding along.
Make sure you don’t wear that lovely white coat for any home renovations!!
